Character details:
All roles require excellent comic ability. Apart from Frank and Diedre, the same characters reappear in each act with different names and disguises (which could include different accents, though all characters are probably southern). The play’s three acts are set in England in 1946, 1956 and 1966.
Frank More
Aged 26 in Act One, 36 in Act Two and 46 in Act Three. A humane, warm, but rather passive ‘everyman’ character with a strong sense of duty. His hopeful attitude in Act One becomes one of suicidal despair by the end of the play.
Diedre
A love struck, heavily pregnant 16 year old in Act Two (Frank, her teacher, is the father). By Act Three she has become an unhappy, at times resentful, 26 year old with five children. Practical, with a tough streak. Far from innocent. Well spoken RP.
Colonel/Mr Cross/Mr Scace
Middle aged (45 to 60). Larger than life in every sense – domineering, loud and always in control. Character requires a sense of danger. Extrovert and rather bonkers. A brilliant, bold comic role.
Violet/Nell/Mrs Scace (Rover)
Middle aged (45 to 60). Throughout the play she is extremely positive and practical, at times can be inappropriately flirtatious, and is often rather slow on the uptake. A fantastic comic role.
Mike Holden/Geoff Horton/Jack Robinson
Early 20s. Good looking but not especially intelligent. A rather smug Army Captain in Act One, a flirtatious party guest in Act Two and a harassed, unsuccessful (and suicidal) washing machine salesman in Act Three.
Miss Clark/Stephanie/Miss Clegg
Early 20s. Very pretty with a warm manner. A friendly Army Corporal in Act One, a flirtatious party guest in Act Two and a not altogether helpful resident of Scace’s Suicide Sanctuary in Act Three.
